Stage & the City’s Comedy Acting & Writing classes are all about having fun, understanding the comedy industry and working towards creating your own sketches and scripts. Students will explore a variety of acting techniques, comedy concepts and strategies for developing comedic performance. Participants will learn how to conquer stage fright and explore what makes comedy work.

Our Comedy Acting classes are ideal for anyone that wants to build their confidence, learn what makes you funny, have fun, develop their acting skills and say yes to creativity and spontaneity. This course also suits anybody who wishes to improve communication skills for work purposes including dealing with colleagues, clients and public speaking. No previous acting experience is required, just a desire to learn.

Course Content:

Throughout the course, we will work on the process of getting an idea from imagination to page to screen or radio. There will be a specific focus on Comedy Acting for radio, microphone technique, breath and voice work, topical sketch creation and BBC Radio 4 script submissions. Students will be taught methods to learn lines, how to story arch and build characters and understand the difference between stage and screen performance.

There will also be a focus on treatments, how to pitch ideas, methods to film tasters and pilots and one-on-one help with Comedy TV and radio ideas.

Students will be recorded and be able to watch themselves back to gain insights into the development over the course. They will also participate in table reads and critique each other’s work.

The course will culminate in a showcase and students will each receive a comedy radio demo which will be recorded in class for them to take away as part of their comedy pitches.
